Some dealers grade with + or – to indicate top
or bottom of the grade
There
is allowance for the
grades based on age of the books
Very Fine (VF) Mint (M)
Book and Jacket have to be absolutely perfect. No minor wear
at all.
Fine (F)
No obvious wear. A fine book doesn't have to be perfect.
Needs to
be tight, crisp, clean and near the top of it's class.
Near Fine (NF)
Close to fine but not quite meeting the very strict guidelines.
Very Good (VG)
Above
average. Books have
been handled and
read. May have some
minor wear and
faults that should be described.
Good (G)
This
term does not mean what it sounds like, more of the opposite. Will have some wear and
faults which should
be described.
Poor (P)
Usually
the worst grade possible. Will
have very
strong wear and faults. Could
be torn,
soiled, water damaged, loose, missing pages, etc.
As New (AN)
The way you would expect to find in a bookstore. May have
slight shelf
wear and is accepted to be crisp and clean.
Generally
has some wear or faults and is not usually suited for collectors. Idea for those who just
want to read the
book.
